OK it was bound to happen eventually… a song about Covid. Or more accurately, a song TO Covid. I know it might seem ridiculous. Or cheesy. I will readily admit to it being both of those things. But Covid has been such an overwhelming presence in our lives this past year that I was somehow compelled to call it out directly, in a song.
Almost every human on the planet has been affected by the pandemic. We’ve been masking, quarantining, avoiding physical touch, and generally limiting our social contact. At first we thought these adjustments might last a few weeks or months; but here we are, a year down the road, and Covid continues to affect our travel plans, our finances, our family activities, our social lives. We are tired of it, and long for the return to “normal”, whatever that might entail.
And although a virus can’t actually be personified, I somehow wanted to address Covid directly and let it (him? her? Anyone got the lowdown on Covid’s pronouns?) know how I felt; it seemed like the best way to capture the vibe.
Thanks to Andrew Hanmer on drums and Shelley Lotus on backup vocals.

FORGETTABLE YEAR Covid When will you go On your merry way? No one Should ever have to feel this way For months on end You've taken our time You've tested our sanity No this isn't really living We need to be touched We want to see family We need to go out dancing Wrap our arms around a friend Forgettable year Of living in fear These pages will get turned And the lessons will get learned We are growing old As the story is told We lost a year of memories Standing by as history unfolds Covid Look what you did You drew the brakes To slow us down Look how This great big world Can make us feel So small You've taken our time You've tested our sanity No this isn't really living We need to be touched We want to see family We need to go out dancing Wrap our arms around a friend Forgettable year Of living in fear These pages will get turned And the lessons will get learned We are growing old As the story is told We lost a year of memories Standing by as history unfolds There are so many roads We're in need of some assistance As we go the social distance And rise to the task And see the through the mask All those experiences missed Just add them to the bucket list And count the days The forgettable days Forgettable year
